List of Naval Radio, Radar, and Sonar Equipment

from WA5CAB: "This is a reference handbook. There are no photographs. The handbook starts with an explanation of the Joint Army/Navy (JAN or AN) nomenclature system followed by the Navy Model Letter System. Next is a listing of the two, three and four letter Navy Contractor Codes as of late 1944 (These codes were also used by the Signal Corps on the nameplates of many sets). The balance of the book is an alphabetical listing of JAN, Navy and (only if procured by USN/USMC) Signal Corps equipment. Each entry consists of seven columns as follows: Model (revisions or later orders [suffix A, B, or -1, -2, etc.] in general are separate listings), Contractor(s), Year (of first contract or order but it isn't specified whether FY or CY), Normal Power Output, Emission, Frequency Range, Purpose -Remarks."

Catalogue of Naval Radio Equipment

from WA5CAB: "SHIPS 275 is one of the indispensable reference works for the WW-II U.S. military radio collector. Originals are extremely rare. It was classified CONFIDENTIAL during the War (the current equivalent classification is SECRET) and very few originals exist. All copies were supposed to have been destroyed when it was superceded and greatly expanded shortly post-war by NAVSHIPS 900,116.
The organization or structure is similar to the radio sections of the Signal Corps TM 11-487. It contains basic technical information on ground and shipboard radio sets, including Radio Direction-Finding Equipments, Radio Transmitting-Receiving Equipments, Radio Receiving Equipments, Radio Transmitting Equipments, Radio Homing Beacon Equipments, Signal Corps Equipments (only those used by USN/USMC) and Harbor Detection Equipments.
The earliest sets in each category are DAB, MN, RAA, TAB-5, YE-1, BC-312, JM-4/QBC-1/RBF-1. The complete list of equipment covered is too long to give here. Each listing consists typically of two to four pages with one or more photographs, technical specifications, vacuum tube complement, list of major components, and a text description. This reference does not cover aircraft, radar, IFF or aids to navigation equipment, some or most of which were classified higher than CONFIDENTIAL."

Catalogue of Naval Radio Equipment

from WA5CAB: "NAVSHIPS 900,116 replaced SHIPS 275 in 1946. It was considerably expanded between 1946 and 1952, after which it and Signal Corps TM 11-487 were merged into JANAP 161. It includes entries on ground and shipboard radios, radio sets, radar, sonar, sound/audio and RDF equipment. The earliest equipment covered dates from about 1926. Test equipment is covered in a companion volume, NAVSHIPS 900,105. Each equipment entry includes basic technical information such as power input and output, frequency coverage, list of major components, related technical publications, some accessories and usually photographs or line drawings of the equipment. Some entries also include the vacuum tube complement."
