Beach Mk 4B s/n 100

#100 was the first Mk 4B chassis, although #101 was actually completed earlier.
This car was shipped as a kit (unassembled without engine or transmission) to Hugh Grammer of Ft. Worth TX on 9/18/64. Grammer assembled it with a Bandini engine during the winter of 1964-65 with help from Don Westerheide.
Grammer was very successful racing in 65-66. Don Westerheide and Danny Poor raced it later, also with a Bandini engine. Poor traded the Beach and $1 for a Mini from Overseas Motors.
Around 1968-69 a 1275 Mini engine was installed by John Sturgess at Overseas Motors. Gary Brizendine built the "Pop-Rivet Special" body for it at this time. Wayne Rutherford raced it some then.
Walter Mays acquired the car and drove it at races in Texas and Mexico in 1969-70 with the fiberglass body back on it. After the fiberglass body was damaged hauling the car to/from Mexico in the bed of a pick-up, so Gary Brizendine put the "Pop-Rivet Special" bodyback on it. In 1970 Jug Latham traded a Huffaker-engined MGB to Mays for the Beach - Latham put on 1/2 a Studebaker badge and called it the "Stud".
After a crash at the 1970 ARRC runoffs, Latham rebuilt the car with a Cosworth engine and Lambert body.
Dennis Hackler raced it in 1974-79 (as the "Mariah") and rebuilt the roll cage after a crash at Green Valley.
The chassis was then owned by Forrest Tindall & Gerry Strickfaden before going to Frank Sible who restored it with Beach bodywork and a Ford 1600 engine. Gus Meyjes acquired it in 2008 and got it back on track (after 30 years) for its first race in May 2009. See photos below.
There has been some confusion in the past over this car. Hugh Kleinpeter wrote in 1995 that Grammer got #100 and then sold it uncompleted to Fred Cox. We now know that is not correct. Fred Cox got a Mk4 kit less engine (s/n 4-001?), probably from Lotus Southwest (Gene Beach is sure he never sold a car directly to Fred Cox), but it wasn't from Hugh Grammer.
